Australian investigative journalist Paul Barry has revealed an extensive international business fraud scheme involving British businessman Sanjeev Gupta and Australian financier Lex Greensill in his new book The Big Steal1. The scheme involved acquiring struggling steel mills, aluminum smelters, and other industrial facilities across the globe under the pretense of investment and modernization, then extracting funds while leaving communities, workers, and creditors with massive losses1. The fraud has resulted in approximately $8 billion in debt across Gupta's empire as of late 20251.
The scale of the misconduct extends across multiple continents and institutions. Gupta's enterprises extracted at least $1 billion from Australian operations alone1, while Greensill Capital UK accumulated $8.4 billion in debt1. The United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office initiated an investigation into Gupta's GFG Alliance in May 20211. Greensill was banned from serving as a company director for nine years by the UK Insolvency Service1. In March 2026, the New South Wales Supreme Court ordered the liquidation of Gupta-owned Tahmoor Coal Pty Ltd1, and the Whyalla steel mill's blast furnace was decided to be permanently closed this week, resulting in approximately 500 job losses1. In August 2024, Gupta purchased a Sydney Finger Wharf waterfront apartment for $12.5 million1.
