China's state-owned China Gas Holdings has agreed to a two-decade liquefied natural gas purchase contract with U.S.-based Vigie Corporation, marking a significant expansion of energy imports from America.1 Under the agreement announced at the Gastech energy conference in Bangkok on September 14, China will purchase 500,000 tonnes of American LNG annually beginning in 2030.1 This long-term arrangement brings the total committed annual LNG purchases between China Gas and Vigie to 2.5 million tonnes.1
The deal comes as China seeks to rebuild trade relationships ahead of high-level negotiations with the United States.1 However, the country's recent energy imports from America have faced significant headwinds. Since mid-February 2025, China has imposed tariffs on U.S. energy products, including a 15 percent levy on LNG, effectively halting nearly all American gas purchases.1 This policy shift has contributed to a sharp decline in China's overall LNG imports, which fell to 68.43 million tonnes in 2025, the lowest level in three years.1 In 2021, when China was the world's largest importer of liquefied natural gas, it imported American LNG valued at $6.2 billion.1
