South Australia's parole board has upheld its decision to release James Vlassakis, the youngest offender convicted in the Snowtown murders, following his 26-year prison term.1 Vlassakis pleaded guilty to four murders as part of a broader series of 11 killings committed between 1992 and 1999, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period that expired in August of last year.1 At 18 years old in 1998, he participated in one of the murders and later served as a key witness against co-offenders John Bunting and Robert Wagner.1
The parole decision follows South Australia's Chief Parole Officer Francis Nelson's earlier statement that Vlassakis posed no risk to the community.1 Eight victims' remains were discovered in May 1999 inside drums containing hydrochloric acid within a vault at an abandoned bank in Snowtown, north of Adelaide.1 Vlassakis's release is expected to be subject to conditions including electronic monitoring, restrictions on drugs and alcohol, and geographical limitations.1
