The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General (OIG) has released an investigation exposing severe conditions at a Florida detention facility where immigrants were confined in small metal cages measuring approximately 18 square feet.1 The facility, known as "Alligator Alcatraz," was built in the Everglades over eight days in 2025 following an executive order signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.1 Between July 2025 and January 2026, 79 immigrants were held in these confined spaces for periods ranging from minutes to nearly two hours.1 An OIG inspection conducted in January documented multiple violations of detention standards related to hygiene, medical care, food provision, and safety.1
Detainees reported being denied necessary medications and restricted bathing privileges, allowed showers only three times weekly in bathrooms plagued by pest infestations.1 The facility also failed to provide detainees with access to clean drinking water or means to clean drinking vessels.1 DeSantis announced the facility's closure in June 2026, characterizing it as a temporary operation.1
