Screenwriter Andrew Davies has revealed that he drew creative inspiration from the reality television series Made in Chelsea while adapting Jane Austen's unfinished novel The Watsons for the screen.1 Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday, Davies described the show as "very stimulating and helpful for character relationships and creativity."1 He noted that the modern reality format captures the social dynamics, courtship rituals, and gossip culture that are central to Austen's fictional worlds.1
This is not the first time Davies has looked to contemporary television for influence in his Austen adaptations.1 He previously characterized his 2019 adaptation of Sanditon as the Austen universe's equivalent of Love Island.1 Davies is also known for his 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which featured the now-iconic scene of Colin Firth bathing in a lake.1
