Iridescent clouds painted the sky over parts of Victoria during the weekend, with observers capturing images of the optical phenomenon in the Melbourne suburbs of Waverley and Caroline Springs.1 These clouds, known as iridescent or "rainbow clouds," form when light diffracts around ice crystals in newly formed clouds, producing their distinctive multicolored appearance.1
The phenomenon typically originates in cirrus clouds, which are composed of ice crystals located in the higher levels of the troposphere.1 According to Sarah Scally, a senior meteorologist at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the effect occurs when ice crystals of uniform size scatter light in a specific way.1 Scally explained that iridescent clouds differ from halos—which are created by the refraction and reflection of sunlight through atmospheric crystals—and noted that while such displays are not uncommon in Australia, they are rarely documented.1 "People don't often notice them because they're fleeting," Scally said, highlighting why these atmospheric events frequently go unrecorded despite their occurrence.1
