The German submarine UC-30, which sank near Denmark during World War I, continues to discharge TNT into the ocean, contaminating surrounding waters, seafloor, and marine life.1 The vessel was struck by a British naval mine and sank on April 19, 1917, killing all 27 crew members aboard.1 The submarine was carrying 18 naval mines and six torpedoes at the time of its sinking.1
Scientists have detected TNT traces throughout the marine environment in the vicinity of the wreck.1 A 2024 report commissioned by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency identified approximately 10,127 sunken vessels in Danish waters, with roughly 15 percent originating from the two world wars—specifically from 1910-1920 and 1940-1945.1 The study assessed these wrecks in accordance with requirements of the European Union Water Framework Directive.1
Research efforts to address the threat are underway through the REMARCO project, which is testing underwater robotic technology to locate dangerous ammunition and monitor the deterioration of shipwrecks.1 Germany has already invested significant resources in salvaging some wrecks and recovering World War II ammunition from the Baltic Sea.1 According to Professor Katrine Juul Andresen, "TNT contamination is definitely occurring. The question is how extensive the impact is and how far the pollution spreads in the marine environment."1
