A study published in Wildlife Research reveals a striking difference in behavior between captive-bred and wild saltwater crocodiles released in Bangladesh's mangrove forests.1 Researchers at Murdoch University tracked five adult saltwater crocodiles, including three females that had spent 8 to 22 years in captivity, following their release into the Sundarbans region.1 None of the captive-bred individuals attempted to return to their former facilities; instead, they settled into small, well-defined territories.1
The findings contrast sharply with the behavior of wild crocodiles.1 One relocated wild crocodile, named Jongra, which had been moved 132 kilometers from its original capture site, displayed clear homing behavior, with movement patterns oriented toward its former location and daily travel distances exceeding 30 kilometers.1 These results suggest that using captive-reared sub-adult and adult crocodiles may be a viable strategy for bolstering wild populations, particularly given that Bangladesh's remaining saltwater crocodile population consists of only approximately 140 adult individuals.1 The research was led by Ru Somaweera and published in volume 53, issue 4 of Wildlife Research in 2026.1
