Two prominent scientific experts have withdrawn from the defense team of Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven infants and attempting to kill seven others, citing concerns about the scientific credibility of arguments being presented in her case.1 Helen Shannon, a British chemical engineer, and Geoff Chase, a biomedical engineering professor from New Zealand, stepped down on Monday after determining that certain claims advanced by the defense were inconsistent with established evidence and physiological principles.1
Shannon and Chase had previously submitted a 100-page report questioning the insulin poisoning charges against Letby, arguing there was substantial reasonable doubt surrounding two of the convictions related to those allegations.1 However, the experts stated that other arguments put forward by the defense team were "inconsistent with the evidence, science and established physiology," prompting their departure from the case.1 Letby was sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences in 2023 for the deaths and attempted murders of infants at Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England between June 2015 and June 2016.1
The Criminal Cases Review Commission has been examining Letby's case for 18 months, with findings expected to be released on Tuesday.1
