According to research by Maikesu Institute in 2025, the average monthly living expenses for surveyed university students stood at 1,744 yuan across the nation, marking a 43.9 percent increase from 1,212 yuan in 2016.1 However, significant regional disparities exist: students in first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen report average monthly living costs between 2,500 and 3,500 yuan, while those in emerging first-tier cities typically spend 1,500 to 2,500 yuan monthly, and students in second and third-tier cities manage on 1,000 to 1,800 yuan.1
