The UK government has announced a 20% reduction in business rates for pubs, clubs, and live music venues across England, effective from April next year.[1] The policy is expected to benefit nearly 32,000 hospitality businesses, with the average pub saving approximately £1,100 annually.[1]
The initiative will be funded through a review of business rate reliefs that do not contribute to community development, such as those for vape shops, as well as enhanced tax enforcement against non-compliant online marketplaces.[1] The government plans to impose higher tax rates on vape shops as part of this funding strategy.[2]
Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UK Hospitality, welcomed the announcement as "a positive down payment on the PM's commitment to support hospitality," though she noted the sector requires broader business rate relief support across the entire industry.[2] She highlighted that hospitality has borne an additional £6 billion in taxes over the past two years.[2]
The largest live music venues will not be eligible for the discount.[1]
