A cross-party delegation of eight young members from the "Japan-China Friendship Parliamentarians Union" traveled to Beijing on September 13 for a three-day visit, while former Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi is scheduled to lead a trade promotion delegation to China from September 27 to 30.1
The deterioration in ties traces back to Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae's remarks about "Taiwan contingency" in November of the previous year, which has kept bilateral relations at a historic low over the past year.1 According to analysts, despite the frequency of lawmakers' visits to China, there remain no indications that the relationship is emerging from this difficult period.1 Beijing has shown no willingness to compromise on its fundamental position regarding Japan's stance on Taiwan, with the deputy head of the Chinese Communist Party's International Liaison Department, Lu Kang, calling on Japan's political establishment to "honestly and faithfully handle the Taiwan issue in accordance with the one-China principle."1
The two countries have escalated tensions across multiple domains. China added twenty Japanese entities to its export control list in late June, while August saw eighteen Japan-China air routes suspended entirely, with Chinese flights to Japan experiencing a thirty percent cancellation rate that month.1 Additionally, China raised visa fees for Japanese citizens entering the country starting September 14, with increases reaching up to six times the previous rates.1
