Two new scholarly works examine the dramatic transformations that have reshaped Australian politics in the twenty-first century. Scholar Paul Strangio and journalist George Megalogenis have each published analyses identifying the major forces behind political upheaval, with both emphasizing the enduring influence of former Prime Minister John Howard on contemporary leaders.1
Megalogenis identifies three critical shocks that have fundamentally altered the country's political landscape.1 For the first time, immigrants and their children now constitute a majority of the population; professional women have become the largest segment of the workforce; and traditional international allies and trade partners have become unreliable.1 These demographic and geopolitical shifts have created new political constituencies and vulnerabilities. Chinese-Australian voters emerged as a pivotal voting bloc in the 2022 and 2025 elections, with Morrison's rhetoric alienating this group and contributing to the Coalition's defeat in 2022.1
Scott Morrison, who served as Prime Minister during much of this period, receives particularly harsh assessment from both authors.1 His tenure was marked by controversial decisions including a trip to Hawaii during the 2019 bushfire crisis, a $185 million expenditure to reopen the Christmas Island detention centre, and the secret appointment of five ministerial positions without informing the other four ministers.1 New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet publicly described him as "a terrible person."1 Strangio characterizes Morrison as the century's most "abhorrent Prime Minister," possessing what he calls an "enraging cynicism and arrogance."1
In contrast, recent political shifts have produced more demographically representative leadership. Anthony Albanese became Australia's first Prime Minister with a non-Anglo-Celtic surname, and following the 2025 election, women comprise a majority of government members, with several holding senior cabinet positions.1
