Mary Gaudron, who broke new ground as the first woman appointed to Australia's High Court, has died at the age of 83.1 Born on January 5, 1943, Gaudron was appointed to the High Court in 1987 at age 44 and served until 2003.1 Throughout her judicial career, she left a lasting mark on Australian law, most notably through her involvement in the landmark Mabo v Queensland decision, which recognized indigenous land rights and described the dispossession of Aboriginal people as "the darkest aspect of this country's history."1
Gaudron's trailblazing path predated her High Court appointment by years.1 In 1972, she became the first woman admitted to the New South Wales Bar Association, and was appointed deputy chair of the Arbitration Commission in 1974.1 Governor-General Sam Mostyn paid tribute to her historic role, stating that "she was the first woman appointed to the High Court of Australia and the only female judge in the court's first century."1 Following her retirement from the bench, Gaudron continued her legal work internationally, serving as president of the Administrative Tribunal of the International Labour Organization in Geneva.1 Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek highlighted Gaudron's advocacy for equal pay and her efforts to break barriers for women in law and public service.1
