New Zealand researchers have identified struvite, a mineral recovered from wastewater treatment, as a viable substitute for conventional phosphate fertilisers.1 Field trials demonstrated that perennial ryegrass achieved over 30% greater phosphorus uptake when treated with struvite compared to single superphosphate.1 The findings address mounting pressure on fertiliser costs, as single superphosphate prices have doubled since 2000, rising from NZ$200 per tonne to NZ$400, with rates peaking at NZ$480 in 2008, NZ$500 in 2022, and projected to reach NZ$550 by 2026.1
Laboratory and field experiments revealed additional advantages of the recovered material. Greenhouse data showed that struvite delivered an average 49% higher plant-available phosphorus uptake than single superphosphate.1 A leaching trial in low-phosphorus-retention soils indicated that single superphosphate released 80% more total phosphorus into drainage water than struvite, suggesting the recovered mineral could reduce nutrient loss and environmental runoff.1 Since New Zealand relies entirely on imported phosphate for its fertiliser needs,1 the practical implementation of this alternative has already begun—Watercare Services has established large-scale struvite recovery operations at the Mangere wastewater treatment plant.1
