Historian Tom Griffiths has examined the life and work of Alice Duncan-Kemp, a white woman who grew up at Mooraberrie station in Queensland's Channel Country between Birdsville and Windorah during the early twentieth century, in his book Alice's Dreaming.1 Duncan-Kemp produced four published works during her lifetime and one posthumous publication, all based on her intimate contact with the Mithaka people.1 Her detailed observations of Mithaka culture proved significant enough to support the 2015 Indigenous land rights determination that recognized the Mithaka as the traditional owners of the region.1
Griffiths's work explores how the concept of "Dreaming" connected to Duncan-Kemp, despite her being a white child.1 According to recorded accounts, Duncan-Kemp survived a wading incident at Bullo River at age two, creating an association with Yammacoona, a Dreaming ancestral figure of the Mithaka.1 However, Duncan-Kemp's sympathetic documentation of Indigenous culture exists within a broader context of severe colonial violence and exploitation.1 The Channel Country had witnessed more than a dozen major massacres, predominantly at water sources and often involving Aboriginal police.1 A repressive 1897 Queensland law mandated large-scale confinement of Aboriginal people on reserves, and the Mithaka at Mooraberrie were subjected to unpaid labor, including pastoral work and domestic service.1 While Griffiths's book presents the vitality of Indigenous culture alongside this violent historical context, Duncan-Kemp's published works contained serious plagiarism issues.1
