British fintech company Revolut has confirmed a data breach in which sensitive customer information was disclosed to unauthorized third parties through fraudulent requests impersonating government agencies.1 According to a company spokesperson, "Revolut recently identified a sophisticated external impersonation fraud, in which unauthorized third parties submitted false information requests using legitimate government agency email domain addresses."1
The compromised data includes customers' dates of birth, postal addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, passport and driving license copies, identity verification selfies, account statements, and transaction history.1 Revolut stated that the company has blocked the fraudulent email account and notified relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities, while emphasizing that its systems and customer funds remain unaffected.1
Revolut operates as a bank across more than 30 countries and serves over 80 million customers globally.1 The incident comes as the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted Revolut conditional approval to establish a national bank earlier this month, with expected launch in the first half of 2027.1 Additionally, Revolut is considering a public listing that could value the company at approximately $200 billion, compared to its private valuation of $7.5 billion in November of last year.1
