A team of geochemists from the University of Adelaide has discovered evidence that water was already penetrating Earth's deep interior and driving volcanic activity more than 3 billion years ago.1 By studying ancient volcanic rocks from the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia, the researchers identified a mechanism they term "dripduction," in which water-rich sections of cold crust periodically sank into the mantle and released water that helped generate magma.1
This finding demonstrates that Earth was already cycling material between its surface and deep interior long before modern plate tectonics became established.1 The research, conducted by scientists from the University of Adelaide, Monash University, the Geological Survey of Western Australia, Curtin University, the Australian National University, Cardiff University, and the German Centre for Marine Research, has been published in Nature Communications, Volume 17, Issue 1, in 2026.1
