Researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health have discovered that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, extends lifespan and reduces signs of aging in elderly mice.1 The study, led by Dr. Danica Chen at UC Berkeley and published in Nature in 2026, demonstrated that the drug improved memory, muscle function, and blood sugar control while producing anti-aging effects that surpassed those achieved through caloric restriction alone.1
In the trial, semaglutide extended median lifespan by nearly 100 days in 20-month-old mice.1 After three months of treatment, mice receiving semaglutide showed improvements in both muscle and cognitive function.1 When compared to mice on a 24% calorie-restricted diet, semaglutide-treated mice performed better in exploratory behavior, spatial memory, and blood glucose maintenance.1 Notably, mice treated with semaglutide maintained relatively stable metabolic rates, whereas those on calorie-restricted diets experienced decreased metabolic speed.1 These findings suggest that GLP-1 drugs may influence the aging process through biological pathways independent of dietary intervention.1
However, researchers emphasized that further clinical studies are needed to determine whether these effects can be translated to humans.1
