Multiple universities nationwide have recently begun purchasing commercial properties near their campuses and converting them into student housing, with Hubei University marking the first such initiative in the country.1 The refurbished student apartments are equipped with air conditioning, washing machines, and hot water systems, offering affordable accommodation at 1,320 yuan annually for double occupancy rooms.1
Following Hubei University's pioneering effort in acquiring properties from the "Wuhan Chengjian Waterfront" development, several other institutions have adopted the same model.1 Shenzhen University, Hefei University of Technology, Central South University, and China University of Mining and Technology have all initiated similar projects.1 China University of Mining and Technology's Guanshan Mansion doctoral student dormitory brought its first 174 units online, fully equipped with standard amenities.1
This housing initiative aligns with national policy support. In 2024, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Education, among seven departments, released guidance encouraging universities to purchase or lease nearby residential properties.1 To incentivize participation, Jiangsu Province offers financial subsidies of 2,000 yuan per bed annually for rental projects and covers 30 percent of acquisition costs for purchased properties.1
