Uganda's Toro Kingdom held funeral services for late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on Saturday, September 12, in the western city of Entebbe, bringing to a close a nine-day mourning period.1 The 34-year-old monarch died last month from cancer.1
The funeral has been overshadowed by a fierce succession battle. The royal council designated 54-year-old Edward Rukidi Kijjanangoma, the late king's cousin, as his successor on Wednesday, but the deceased king's immediate family members contended that his will named an illegitimate son as the rightful heir.1 Social media posts suggested the existence of at least two potential successors claiming to be the king's biological children.1 Tensions over the dispute eased only on the eve of the funeral.
Queen Mother Best Kemigisa called for unity during the funeral proceedings, stating: "I also beseech those quarreling over the throne: please wait, let us first mourn and bury my son King Oyo."1 Uganda retains several traditional kingdoms despite being led by an elected national head of state; these kingdoms were restored in 1993.1
