Au Kam-san, a former pro-democracy member of Macau's Legislative Assembly, faces trial on national security charges in what marks the first such prosecution under Macau's national security law.1 The Macau Judicial Police detained Au in July of last year on suspicion of colluding with foreign hostile forces, spreading false information, and interfering with the Chief Executive election.1
Au stands accused of three offenses: subversion of state power, establishing contact with organizations, groups, or individuals outside Macau in acts endangering national security, and breach of confidentiality.1 The charge of subverting state power carries a maximum sentence of 10 to 25 years imprisonment.1 The case proceeded through preliminary examination in July of this year, which confirmed the prosecution.1 Au has remained in custody for over one year since his arrest.1
The Macau Court of First Instance announced on September 11 that trial proceedings will be conducted in closed session.1 The hearing is scheduled to begin on September 16.1 This decision follows amendments passed by the Macau Legislative Assembly in March of this year, which stipulated that legal proceedings should be conducted in closed court if public trial would harm national security interests.1
