Astronomers have identified serious unintended electromagnetic leakage from Starlink satellites that jeopardizes radio astronomy observations. A research team at Curtin University in Australia analyzed approximately 76 million radio images over 29 days and detected 112,534 individual radio emissions from 1,806 Starlink satellites 1. The strength of these leaked signals reaches approximately 10⁶ Jy/beam, roughly 10,000 times stronger than the early universe hydrogen signals that the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) needs to detect 1. As a result, about 30 percent of images at certain frequencies contain Starlink interference 1.
The leaked signals fall within two International Telecommunication Union-protected radio astronomy frequency bands: 73–74.6 MHz and 150.05–153 MHz 1. Steven Tingay from Curtin University remarked that the Starlink leakage intensity is "comparable to the brightest natural radio sources in the sky" 1. The Starlink constellation now comprises more than 6,000 satellites 1. These unintended emissions exist in a legal gray area under current international frameworks, which lack clear regulatory mechanisms for accidental signal leakage 1. SpaceX has indicated openness to hardware improvements in the future to address the issue 1.
