The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that the largest cyclospora outbreak in US history has ended.1 The outbreak, linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce processed by Taylor Fresh Foods, a company operating in central Mexico, infected 12,883 people across 21 states, resulting in 570 hospitalizations and 2 deaths.1 All affected products have expired and are no longer available for purchase in stores or restaurants, eliminating the risk of further infections.1
The outbreak occurred between May 1 and September 8, 2024, with cases reported across 49 states and Washington DC, though Michigan experienced the most severe impact with over 14,000 cases and 2 fatalities.1 At its peak, the outbreak caused more than 1,000 infections daily, though by August the rate had declined to an average of fewer than 2 cases per day.1 The median age of patients was 46 years old, with women comprising 56 percent of cases and men 44 percent.1
Common symptoms included diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, headaches, and low fever.1 The CDC recommends handwashing, thoroughly rinsing fresh produce under running water, removing damaged portions, and heating food to 158 degrees Fahrenheit or higher to prevent infection.1 The FDA continues investigating Taylor Fresh Foods and other cyclospora cluster outbreaks.1
