However, the solemnity of the 25th-anniversary observances was fractured by political discord at Ground Zero. More than 110,000 family members of victims signed a petition opposing Mayor Mamdani's attendance at the World Trade Center memorial service, citing allegations of Islamophobia against him.69 Despite the opposition, Mamdani attended the ceremony, where he was photographed shaking hands with Rudy Giuliani.69 This incident marked a departure from the traditionally nonpartisan character of 9/11 commemorations, as partisan divisions threatened the unified solemnity of the memorial.6 Ceremonies also took place in Seattle, Colorado Springs, and other locations across the country.12
