More than two decades after the September 11 terrorist attacks, thousands of first responders and survivors continue to suffer from lasting health consequences linked to exposure at the World Trade Center site. Dr. Raja Flores, director of thoracic surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, has written about how the disaster's impact persists through disease and illness for many patients.1 Over 140,000 responders and survivors have registered with the federally managed World Trade Center Health Program, and more than 8,000 of these registered members have died, with the death toll continuing to rise.1
The contaminated air at the disaster site exposed people to crushed concrete, fiberglass, asbestos, heavy metals, and combustion byproducts.1 Tens of thousands have subsequently developed cancers, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and mental health problems linked to their exposure to the contaminated environment.1 As the 25th anniversary of the attacks approaches, a new moment of silence will be added during commemorative events to honor those who died years later from illnesses contracted at the World Trade Center site.1
