An international research team has uncovered a remarkably well-preserved tomb dating back approximately 3,000 years in the Theban necropolis near Luxor, Egypt. 1 The burial chamber belonged to Paser, an official from the Ramesside period, roughly 1292–1069 BCE. 1 Located in the Lower Sheikh ʿAbd el-Qurna region of the necropolis, the discovery was made during flood mitigation work in an area that has served as a major royal and elite burial ground since around 1550 BCE. 1
The tomb's walls are adorned with vivid paintings depicting Paser and his wife alongside religious scenes and offerings of food and flowers, providing valuable insights into ancient Egyptian daily life and social hierarchy. 1 However, the murals are currently covered with layers of dirt and will require specialized conservation expertise before archaeologists can fully document and study them. 1 The international team, affiliated with Leiden University's Institute for the Study of the Ancient Near East and Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, has been conducting fieldwork at the site since 2018. 1
The discovery underscores the growing urgency surrounding archaeological preservation in the region, as climate change is expected to significantly increase the frequency and intensity of flooding in the coming years, threatening these fragile artifacts. 1 The necropolis encompasses approximately 10 square kilometers and remains one of Egypt's most significant repositories of ancient heritage. 1
