China has lodged formal complaints with Italy and the European Union over Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim's attendance at a European democratic conference.12 Hsiao was invited to participate in the Ventotene Conference on European Freedom and Democracy held in Italy.2
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing had raised "serious representations" with both Italian and European authorities regarding the Taiwan politician's participation in the event.2 However, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei countered that China has no right to interfere in the vice president's invited visit to Europe to attend European Parliament activities.2 According to Taiwan officials, this marks the second European visit by Vice President Hsiao within the past year.2 China has consistently opposed any form of official contact between its diplomatically recognized countries and Taiwan.2
