Japanese residents held a rally on September 7 in Sasebo City to oppose the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's deployment of the Aegis destroyer Chokai after the vessel completed a test firing of Tomahawk cruise missiles off the U.S. coast.1 The ship had been dispatched to the United States in September of the previous year and completed the Maritime Self-Defense Force's first-ever test firing of Tomahawk cruise missiles in July, returning to its home port in Sasebo in late August.1 Protesters carried signs reading "Do not deploy missiles in Sasebo" and "Oppose deployment of missiles for preemptive strikes," arguing that the development of such capabilities poses security risks and contradicts Japan's principle of "exclusive defense."1
The Ministry of Defense plans to retrofit a total of seven additional Aegis destroyers beyond the Chokai to equip them with Tomahawk missile-firing capabilities.1
