A Hong Kong court on Friday handed down prison sentences ranging from five to seven years against three democratic activists convicted of incitement to subversion under the national security law, following their organization of an annual Tiananmen Square memorial commemoration.1 Lee Cheuk-yan received a seven-year sentence, Chow Hang-tung was given seven years and three months, and Ho Chun-yan was sentenced to five years and two months.1 The Hong Kong Alliance, the organization behind the commemorative events, was fined HK$1.5 million (approximately US$191,304 and €164,768).1
The three activists were charged in August 2026 with subversion, with the court determining that their organization's calls to "end one-party rule" constituted a challenge to the legitimacy of Chinese Communist Party governance.1 Since Beijing imposed the national security law in 2020, Tiananmen memorial activities have effectively been prohibited in Hong Kong.1
The convictions have drawn international condemnation. Amnesty International spokesperson Sarah Brooks characterized the sentencing as a "triple tragedy."1 Germany and France, which awarded Chow Hang-tung the France-Germany Human Rights Award in 2023, condemned the ruling last month, stating that "peaceful advocacy for human rights is not a crime."1
