One year into the rollout of spring and autumn holidays across China, fourteen provincial-level administrative regions including Zhejiang, Hunan, Yunnan, and Sichuan have now fully implemented the system for primary and secondary schools 1. These holidays typically last two to three days each and can be combined with weekends or statutory holidays to create continuous breaks of five to nine days 1. Foshan has become the first prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province to launch spring and autumn holidays across its compulsory education system 1, yet major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have not yet adopted the policy 1.
Most regions have clarified that spring and autumn holidays are redistributed from schools' discretionary time or existing summer and winter breaks, without increasing the total annual holiday allocation 1. However, implementation challenges persist on the ground. In some areas, teachers are not granted these holidays due to schools' operational scheduling arrangements 1. Hangzhou, which pioneered the spring and autumn holiday system in 2004, offers an example of extended breaks—in autumn 2026, certain city districts can combine their autumn holiday with the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays to create a continuous break of up to thirteen days 1. Zhejiang became the first province to fully implement spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary schools in October 2025 1.
