A scientific expedition led by Tsinghua University and the Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology under the China Geological Survey has identified a large-scale active hydrothermal vent area in the back-arc basin of the western Pacific within China's exclusive economic zone.1 The research vessel Xiangyanghong 10 departed from Shenzhen on August 10, embarking on an 18-day deep-sea hydrothermal survey mission.1 During the expedition, the team conducted seven submersible dives to explore and characterize the newly discovered field.1
The hydrothermal vents are located at depths between approximately 700 and 1,500 meters, with end-member fluid temperatures exceeding 315°C at the vent orifices.1 The mineral deposit comprises three large conical ore body structures composed primarily of chalcopyrite and pyrite—economically important minerals.1 Notably, the ore contains associated gold at concentrations reaching as high as 15.4 ppm and silver at levels up to 1,271 ppm, both significantly higher than typical terrestrial ore deposits.1
