Apple has disclosed a compatibility framework for its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, designed to enable older applications to function without immediate updates.1 The system provides three distinct compatibility modes corresponding to different iOS versions, ensuring backward compatibility across the device's ecosystem.
The three compatibility modes are tailored to iOS 26, iOS 27.0, and iOS 27.1.1 Applications built for iOS 26 operate in default compatibility mode, where the system places app views within safe zones surrounded by black borders.1 Apps targeting iOS 27.0 retain some unused display space, allowing them to utilize a greater portion of the screen.1 For iOS 27.1 applications, full compatibility mode enables them to leverage the entire display of the iPhone Duo.1
