The classic 1942 film Casablanca originated from an unproduced stage play titled Everybody Comes to Rick's, created by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison in 1940.1 Warner Bros. acquired the film adaptation rights immediately following the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941,1 and rushed the production into development that summer. The film premiered in New York in November 1942,1 its release coinciding almost precisely with the arrival of American forces in Casablanca during the North African campaign.
The picture starred Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and became a critical success.1 Its writers, the Epstein brothers and Howard Koch, rewrote the screenplay nearly daily throughout production,1 while Bergman remained uncertain about her character's ultimate fate until filming the final scene.1 Virtually the entire film was shot at Warner Bros.' Burbank facility, with the exception of the climactic airport sequence, which was filmed at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles.1 The movie earned three Academy Awards at the 1942–43 Academy Awards ceremony, including Best Picture.1 Among its most celebrated moments is the scene featuring La Marseillaise performed in defiance of German military songs, widely regarded as one of Hollywood's greatest cinematic achievements.1
