Two Labour MPs—one supporting and one opposing the assisted dying legislation—have jointly urged Parliament to avoid invoking the 1911 Parliament Act as an extraordinary procedural measure to advance the bill, cautioning that doing so could trigger a constitutional crisis.1 The warning comes as voting on the contentious measure is scheduled for Friday.1
The assisted dying bill secured a 23-vote majority when it passed the House of Commons last year.1 However, its progress has stalled in the House of Lords, where opponents have submitted over 1,000 amendments, effectively blocking its passage.1 The proposed legislation would permit terminally ill adults with a life expectancy of fewer than six months to end their lives following approval by a specialist panel.1
MP Gareth Snell, who backs the bill, and MP Meg Hillier, who opposes it, jointly cautioned that invoking the Parliament Act would constitute an "extraordinary risk" and lead to a "constitutional showdown."1 Since its 1949 amendment, the 1911 Parliament Act has been used only sparingly to enact legislation, including measures decriminalizing homosexuality and banning fox hunting.1
