Britain's National Health Service experienced unprecedented pressure during the summer months, with accident and emergency departments recording their highest-ever attendance figures for the season.1 Between June and August, A&E departments handled nearly 7.3 million patient visits, representing an almost 1 million increase compared to the same period in 2022, when 6.4 million attendances were recorded.1 The surge extended beyond emergency departments, as ambulances managed approximately 2.4 million callouts during this three-month span—also a record high.1
The strain on NHS services has manifested across multiple metrics. An estimated 111,379 people were waiting more than a year to begin routine treatment as of the end of July, up from 105,711 at the end of June.1 Only 65.4% of patients in July began hospital treatment within the 18-week referral target, a decline from 65.8% in June.1 Additionally, an average of 2,973 patients across England received corridor care daily in August, underscoring capacity constraints.1 Health Secretary Yvette Cooper observed that "extreme demand is no longer confined to winter," highlighting a shift in NHS pressures.1 Labour has pledged that by July 2029, 92% of patients will be seen within 18 weeks for routine hospital treatment, though Prof Frank Smith cautioned that "if the pace of improvement seen over the last two years continues, no region in England will restore the 18-week standard by 2029."1
