Former Ecuadorian President Abdulá Bucaram has been convicted and sentenced to nine years and four months in prison on charges of corruption and organized crime.1 The 74-year-old ex-leader, who was arrested in February 2020, may serve his sentence at home under Ecuadorian law.1
In the same case, Bucaram's son Jacob was also found guilty of illegally selling at least 21,000 COVID-19 test kits and medical supplies during the pandemic in 2020.1 The trial, which has spanned six years, proceeded after Ecuador's chief prosecutor filed an appeal that reversed a judge's dismissal decision from 2021.1 Bucaram had previously been declared mentally unfit to govern in 1997 and went into exile in Panama for nearly two decades before returning to Ecuador in 2017.1
