The National Natural Science Foundation of China announced on August 26, 2026, that it has substantially increased funding for its Youth Science Fund Program Category C (Category C), expanding support from approximately 24,000 projects in 2025 to 36,000 projects in 2026—a growth exceeding 50 percent.1 The foundation attributed this expansion to increased central government financial support and stated that both Category C and General Program funding levels have notably risen in 2026 to promote original research and cultivate young scientific talent.1
The foundation received a total of 470,561 project applications and ultimately funded 69,563 projects across all categories.1 The Youth Science Fund Program is structured into three tiers—Categories A, B, and C—arranged in increasing order of competition level.1 In 2024, the foundation removed the previous restriction that limited applicants who had been rejected twice from reapplying in subsequent cycles.1
