A report has called for the enactment of Trew's law, which would automatically review historical cases involving imprisoned police officers to overturn wrongful convictions.1 The proposed legislation takes its name from Winston Trew, who was framed by corrupt police detective sergeant Derek Ridgewell and spent nearly 50 years fighting for vindication before being exonerated in 2019.1
Since 2018, a total of 13 victims of Ridgewell have had their convictions overturned, with a 14th case having been referred to the Court of Appeal in February.1 Ridgewell himself was imprisoned for seven years in 1980 for theft of mail bags worth £364,000.1 According to the report, between 2023 and 2026, at least 64 serving or former police officers have been imprisoned for serious dishonesty, violence, sexual violence, and abuse of power.1
Under Trew's law, convictions would trigger immediate independent review, with affected individuals required to be notified of the process.1 A campaign launch event for the proposed legislation is scheduled to take place Thursday evening at Lambeth town hall in south London.1
