A wild bull elephant in Nepal's Chitwan National Park has struck the same family twice across a span of 14 years, leaving three generations devastated. The animal, known as Durbar, killed Shanichara Bot's parents in December 2012, and returned to attack her household again in July 2026, resulting in the deaths of her daughter-in-law and a four-year-old grandson.1
The Bot family's attempt to escape their tragic fate proved futile despite their extraordinary efforts. Following the first attack in December 2012, when Durbar fatally mauled Shanichara Bot's father Budilam and mother Jalali, the family relocated tens of kilometers away and crossed two major rivers in hopes of safety.1 Their relocation, however, could not shield them from the elephant's return. On the morning of July 5, 2026, Durbar invaded Bot's new home in Jagatpur, Chitwan District, killing her daughter-in-law Ashika Bot and her grandson Barat Bot, age four.1
Since first attacking humans in 2010, Durbar has been responsible for at least 25 deaths.1 Following the initial 2012 attacks, Nepali military forces and Chitwan National Park officials conducted a two-week capture operation during which the elephant was shot twice but escaped into dense forest.1 When Durbar reappeared in the winter of 2016, authorities pursued a different approach: the elephant's tusks were trimmed, a satellite collar was fitted, and it was released back into the wild rather than being hunted down.1
