Apple has unveiled a new authentication technology designed to verify the authenticity of photographs taken on its flagship devices.12 The feature, called Reference Image, will be available on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models and is expected to launch later this month.2
The system works by having the camera sensor digitally sign each pixel captured during photography, creating an immutable reference image through Apple's Private Cloud Compute service.12 This reference image can be viewed within the Photos application and compared against other versions of the same photo to detect any modifications or AI-based alterations.12
