Anthropic's economics team has unveiled an economic scenario exploration tool designed to model how artificial intelligence will reshape the United States economy in the coming years, with projections spanning employment, growth, and unemployment across three distinct scenarios.1 The modeling, which builds on the technical report "Economic Scenarios for Transformative AI" by Korinek et al. (2026), illustrates that while AI will drive GDP expansion, the gains will be unevenly distributed, with knowledge workers facing wage stagnation or decline even as capital ownership captures a larger share of economic benefits.1
The tool presents three contrasting futures. In the moderate scenario, GDP growth matches the rate seen during the internet era, while the significant scenario projects that AI could complete half of all knowledge work by 2030, doubling the rate of economic growth.1 The extreme scenario paints a more dramatic picture, with annual growth reaching 15 percent and the economy doubling every 4.5 years.1 An August survey of more than 10,000 Americans found that typical respondents' expectations aligned with the significant change scenario, anticipating a 10 percent GDP increase above baseline by 2030 alongside a rise in unemployment to 5 percent; roughly 10 percent of survey respondents held views consistent with the extreme scenario.1
The analysis reveals a fundamental shift in how economic gains will be distributed between labor and capital. Under the extreme scenario, knowledge workers could face wage stagnation, decline, or job displacement, while overall unemployment may exceed levels typical of standard recessions.1 Although average wages are projected to rise overall, non-knowledge workers would see larger wage increases, while knowledge workers encounter the prospect of wage stagnation.1 The capital income share is projected to rise from 40 percent, correspondingly reducing labor's share of economic returns.1
