Besxar, a startup founded by former OpenAI employee Ashley Pilipiszyn, is developing advanced semiconductor precursors in space through a partnership with SpaceX 1. The company has raised nearly $14 million, including a $9 million seed round led by Dauntless Ventures and Overture VC, to fund its orbital manufacturing initiative 1.
The company plans to conduct approximately 12 test flights aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket boosters to validate a prototype orbital semiconductor factory 1. Two small containers successfully flew on a Starlink mission in July, demonstrating that samples could maintain cleanliness in the vacuum environment of space 1. The flight samples showed the lowest particulate contamination compared to non-flight samples produced on Earth 1.
Pilipiszyn stated that "we're at a time where it's actually more cost-effective to go where the physics already works," reflecting the company's strategy of leveraging space conditions for manufacturing 1.
Besxar intends to supply advanced wafers to chip manufacturers serving data centers, robotics, and electric vehicle sectors 1.
