The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has reaffirmed its commitment to rescuing people in distress at sea, even as its volunteers and staff face online and physical attacks.1 The charity's chief executive, Peter Sparks, condemned threats and false rumors circulating about the organization, which include claims that the RNLI has housed asylum seekers or relocated them to undisclosed locations.1 "Staff and their families have been threatened by people hiding behind masks or keyboards," Sparks stated.1 The organization has dismissed these allegations as "completely baseless and untrue."1
The attacks come amid ongoing political debate surrounding small boat crossings in the English Channel. In 2025, the RNLI has conducted 9,058 rescue operations, of which only 109 involved small boats in the Channel—representing just 1.2 percent of its total work.1 Meanwhile, nearly 95 percent of asylum seekers who crossed the Channel last year were rescued by UK Border Force, not the RNLI.1 The organization emphasizes that under international maritime law, any vessel that encounters people in distress at sea is obligated to provide assistance.1
One RNLI volunteer, Dan Sinclair, recounted a recent rescue operation during which a young girl told him directly: "I love you, thank you."1 "Their boat was sinking before their eyes," Sinclair recalled, describing the emotional weight of such interventions as a father himself.1
