A volunteer firefighter has died while helping to combat a major wildfire that erupted in Turkey's Mediterranean coastal city of Antalya.1 Hasan Kahya collapsed after inhaling heavy smoke during firefighting efforts, triggering a heart attack, and subsequently died in the hospital.1
The wildfire broke out on Monday in the Aksu district of Antalya before rapidly spreading to the Kepez area.1 In response to the emergency, authorities deployed substantial resources including three firefighting aircraft, nine helicopters, 169 fire trucks, and over 1,000 firefighters.1 Beyond Kahya's death, eight others were injured: two people were hospitalized with leg burns, while six others received treatment for smoke inhalation.1 Additionally, more than 100 dogs were evacuated from an animal shelter in Aksu, and hundreds of residents were forced to flee their homes.1 A concurrent wildfire also struck the Kozan area of Adana Province, prompting the evacuation of several hundred residents there as well.1
