Forest officials in India's Odisha state discovered five baby orangutans in the Balasore district forest on Tuesday morning, prompting authorities to suspect international smuggling operations.12 The rescued animals, comprising three males and two females, were found near the Rannakata proposed protected area close to the West Bengal border.2 Given that orangutans are native only to Indonesia and Malaysia, thousands of kilometers from their discovery site, officials believe the animals were abandoned after being trafficked through international smuggling networks and had likely remained in the area for only two to three days.2
The five juveniles have been transferred to Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar, the state capital, for isolation and observation.12 Forest officials conducted searches following the rescue but found no trace of additional orangutans or clues at the site.2 The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has launched an investigation into the matter.1 State Environment Minister Ram Singh Khuntia stated that "we suspect possible involvement of international smuggling syndicates,"1 while legislator Goutam Buddha Das called for "a high-level probe to identify persons involved in the smuggling."1
The incident raises alarm given the critically endangered status of orangutans. According to the World Wildlife Fund, approximately 104,000 orangutans remain in the wild today, compared to over 230,000 a century ago.1 The Tapanuli orangutan species is particularly threatened, with fewer than 800 individuals estimated to survive.1 International commercial trade in orangutans is prohibited under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.2 A similar case occurred in 2022 when two young orangutans were discovered at a border checkpoint between Assam and Mizoram states.2
