The European Union's sports commissioner has sharply criticized FIFA for pursuing what he characterizes as commercially exploitative policies that harm football. Glenn Micallef stated that the organization's plans represent "another example of a series of poor governance decisions that excessively commercialize sport," adding that "this is damaging to football."1

The controversy centers on FIFA's proposal to sell 20 percent of World Cup commercial rights to private investors, a plan that sparked widespread backlash when made public in July.1 In response to the initiative, the human rights organization FairSquare has filed a complaint with FIFA's ethics committee against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, containing eight allegations of breaching ethics rules.1 Four of these allegations are newly added and involve Infantino's relationship with United States President Donald Trump.1 Additionally, EU competition regulators have received complaints regarding FIFA's control over the international match calendar.1

Despite facing extensive criticism and pressure to resign, Infantino has confirmed he will run for a fourth term as FIFA president in March 2027.1
