Reuters has reported that China's military is accelerating research into humanoid robots for potential use in urban combat, based on its review of over one hundred PLA procurement announcements, academic research papers, patents, and official publications.1
However, Zhang Junshuo, a Chinese military expert, has criticized the Reuters reporting as containing "obvious exaggeration and technical misreading."1 According to Zhang, humanoid robots remain in the research phase and are still far from large-scale operational deployment in actual combat scenarios.1 The technology continues to face significant limitations in complex terrain perception, movement reliability, communication security, power consumption, cost, and autonomous decision-making capabilities.1
Rather than serving as frontline combat units, Zhang contends that humanoid robots would more likely first be deployed in auxiliary and high-risk roles such as explosive ordnance disposal, nuclear and chemical reconnaissance, rubble search and rescue, supply transportation, equipment maintenance, and battlefield surveillance.1
