Victoria's parliamentary inquiry into anti-LGBTQIA+ hate crimes has concluded that attacks targeting the community through dating applications are intensifying, with police recording 95 incidents between January 2024 and October 2025.1 The violence predominantly involves suburban young men committing physical and verbal assaults, robbery, extortion, and digital harassment.1
The investigation committee has delivered 41 findings and 35 recommendations to address the escalating threat.1 These proposals span awareness raising, prevention strategies, enhanced police training, digital platform regulation, and the formal definition of hate crimes within legislation.1 Notably, the committee has recommended that Victoria's government consider introducing aggravated hate crime provisions into criminal law.1 The committee has also called for all dating applications operating in Australia to become mandatory signatories to the Australian Online Dating Code.1
The problem extends beyond Victoria, with similar cases documented in New South Wales, Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, and Queensland.1 Similar incidents have also been reported in the United States since 2017.1
