Democratic leaders have firmly opposed the initiative. New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham stated that "the name of New Mexico is not up for discussion—it is ours and predates the United States of America."1 Grisham criticized Trump for attempting to shift attention from what she characterized as a "catastrophic Iran war" and soaring oil prices.1 U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich echoed the opposition, declaring: "There are three things I will call by their real names.
